What is a pinched nerve?
According to the Mayo Clinic, it is a condition in which extreme pressure is applied to a nerve by the tissues, bones, muscles, tendons or cartilage around it, causing weakness, pain, numbness or tingling. It can occur in any part of the body, and the pain can radiate to other areas. One example of a pinched nerve in our hands is carpal tunnel syndrome. While many recover from it in a few days, other people require surgery.
What causes nerve pinching?
The Cleveland Clinic says that various everyday habits, injuries, or even certain health issues can cause a pinched nerve. Here are a few examples:
a) Hunching over a smartphone for long hours
b) Slouching at a desk
c) Repetitive movements
d) Degenerated discs
e) Arthritis
f) Bone spurs
g) Weight gain
h) Inflammation
Certain experts say that in musicians, at times, faulty vocal techniques can trigger a pinched nerve. This can be while they aim for high notes, strained throat singing, rigid postures during performance or holding certain equipment, like microphones, in a stressed manner.
