TV actress Sumona Chakravarti, who has been a popular presence on the Kapil Sharma Show, has been away from the limelight for a while. Recently, the actress shared on her social media page that she consciously stayed away from social media and that there was a reason. Apparently, Sumona underwent surgery for the excision of her endometriosis. Endometrial tissue is a mucous membrane that generally lines the uterine wall, and during each menstrual cycle, it thickens, breaks down, and bleeds.

Endometriosis is a painful condition in which the tissue that forms the inner lining of a person's uterus grows outside of it. In such a situation, it can't leave the body and can affect other reproductive organs as well.

At times, the growth can even occur beyond the pelvic region, according to the Mayo Clinic. The 'excision' procedure, which Sumona underwent, involves physically removing the abnormal endometriosis tissue at its roots. Apparently, in her body, the tissues had progressed massively despite her trying to manage it for years. Generally, excision of endometriosis is a laparoscopic, minimally invasive procedure.

What causes endometriosis?
According to the Mayo Clinic, the exact reason that causes endometriosis is not known. Biological, genetic and environmental factors can all contribute to the condition. A few biological factors include estrogen dominance and immune system dysfunction. Certain other risk factors are endometriosis in family history, early period, short cycles and heavy bleeding.
