Semaglutide mimics glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone that targets brain areas that regulate appetite and food intake.
By slowing gastric emptying, it ensures food moves through the digestive tract more slowly, keeping you fuller for longer with significantly smaller portions. Tirzepatide goes a step further by mimicking both GLP-1 and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) hormones, offering a dual-action approach that often yields even more pronounced weight reduction.
What the clinical data reveals
Rigorous clinical trials published in leading medical publications, including the New England Journal of Medicine, support the efficacy of these medications. The STEP (Semaglutide Treatment Effect in People with Obesity) trials demonstrated that participants using semaglutide lost an average of 15% of their body weight. Meanwhile, the SURMOUNT trials for tirzepatide revealed even more dramatic results, with participants achieving an average weight reduction of over 20%. Beyond cosmetic weight loss, these studies highlight significant improvements in cardiovascular health, blood pressure management, and reduced visceral fat. These robust clinical outcomes paved the way for prompt regulatory approvals from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Debunking the magic bullet myth
Despite their impressive clinical track record, these injections are not magic lifestyle-free solutions. One of the primary challenges is that their effects are temporary; research indicates that once the medication is discontinued, most patients regain a substantial portion of the lost weight. Consequently, long-term management and clinical monitoring are essential. These treatments must be paired with a structured nutrition plan and regular physical activity to achieve sustainable results. Attempting to use these prescription-only medications without professional guidance for cosmetic or minor weight-loss goals is highly dangerous. They are strictly indicated for individuals facing severe obesity-related health complications or those who have struggled to achieve clinically meaningful weight loss through traditional means.
Understanding side effects and necessary precautions
Like all clinical treatments, both Ozempic and Mounjaro carry potential side effects. Gastrointestinal distress, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation, is common during the initial phases of treatment. Rapid weight loss can also lead to sarcopenia, which is the loss of skeletal muscle mass. To counteract this, patients must consume adequate protein and engage in consistent strength training to ensure they lose fat rather than lean muscle. Additionally, the rapid loss of facial fat has led to a widely discussed phenomenon known as 'Ozempic face', where the facial skin appears sagging and prematurely aged. Serious risks, though rare, include pancreatitis. Individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma must avoid these drugs. Therefore, these treatments must only be initiated and supervised by qualified specialists, such as gastroenterologists or endocrinologists, who can tailor the dosage after evaluating the patient's complete medical history.
While these next-generation weight-loss drugs represent some of the most potent weapons modern medicine has against the global obesity epidemic, they should not be viewed as easy shortcuts.
