Ebola cases in DR Congo crosses 7,200, has not peaked yet: Why no vaccines yet

The ongoing Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) has taken more than 3,000 lives this year. Currently, more than 7,200 people are infected with the disease. However, UN officials say that the epidemic hasn't peaked yet. Julien Harneis, UN special Ebola coordinator, told a Geneva press briefing, "It remains a deadly and massive epidemic. There are some areas of progress, but nonetheless, in other areas, we continue to see growth in cases." The current spread began around May this year and is caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain of Ebola. This is the deadliest Ebola outbreak in history.
Why no vaccines yet for the outbreak
The World Health Organisation says there are no licensed vaccines for the current outbreak, as it is caused by multiple distinct strains of the virus. Because the current spread is triggered by the rare Bundibugyo virus strain, which caused only two small outbreaks in the past (2007 and 2012), funding for its vaccine was also not prioritised. However, there is a vaccine for the Zaire strain of Ebola, which is even deadlier. Because the surface proteins of the Zaire and Bundibugyo strains differ, the existing vaccine cannot provide cross-protection against the current spread.
Fast-tracked vaccine development
As the current outbreak is extremely severe, health organisations have reportedly fast-tracked the development of a new vaccine. As of now, there are quite a few leading candidates, and they are:
a) mRNA vaccine by Moderna
b) Oxford Vaccine by Oxford University
c) Three vaccines by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI)
d) Minapharm vaccine, developed through a partnership between the Minapharm Group of Africa and ProBioGen AG of Germany
