Bethlehem Kudumba Unit's 'sathukudi' juice: A powerhouse of hydration

The recently released Malayalam film 'Bethlehem Kudumba Unit,' starring Nivin Pauly, has suddenly put a certain citrus fruit back in the limelight: sathukudi. While Keralites and Tamil Nadu locals might recognise the name, others might remember it from the nostalgic Malayalam movie Chandralekha. Despite the exotic-sounding name, this is none other than the humble mosambi, or sweet lime—an absolute staple of Indian summers.
The colonial voyage of Citrus limetta
Known scientifically as Citrus limetta, sweet lime is deeply woven into the culinary fabric of South Asia, yet its origins lie much further away. Portuguese traders introduced this refreshing fruit to the subcontinent during the colonial era. Sourced from the African nation of Mozambique, the fruit's name eventually morphed into the local tongue as 'mosambi'. Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu and parts of Kerala, it came to be popularly known as sathukudi.
A citrus star with a milder bite
As a prominent member of the citrus family—which also includes oranges, lemons, and grapefruits—the sweet lime is distinguished by its green-to-yellow rind and low acidity. Unlike oranges, it possesses a milder, sweeter taste with just a hint of tanginess. Because it lacks a sharp sour bite, it is highly favoured for direct consumption and is exceptionally popular as a freshly squeezed beverage. Street-side sweet lime juice stalls are a ubiquitous sight across India, offering instant relief during sweltering summers.
A powerhouse of hydration and nutrients
Sweet lime is exceptionally high in water content, making it an outstanding natural hydrator. It is packed with vitamin C, folate, and potassium, which help boost immunity and replenish lost electrolytes. Beyond its juicy pulp, the fruit's aromatic peel is loaded with essential oils. These extracts are highly valued in the global food, beverage, and perfume industries for their refreshing and therapeutic fragrances.
One of the best fruits for weight loss
According to 'HealthifyMe,' mosambi is the second best fruit for weight loss, after lemon. Adding one or two glasses of mosambi juice to a healthy eating plan can give effective results. Because this low-calorie fruit is rich in citric acid, it can reduce cravings for junk food. A cup of mosambi juice has just around 31 calories. The vitamin C in it also helps burn fat faster. Its high fibre and water content also help you feel full.
