Kannur: A meeting of the Taliparamba Municipal Council turned tense as councillors argued over the issue of garbage dumping within the municipality. The meeting had been called after a previous session was adjourned due to similar heated exchanges.
The latest clash began when CPM councillors raised the issue of septage from Bamboo Fresh, a hotel in Chiravakku, being released into the Kakkathodu canal, which had caused public anger. The argument soon escalated, and after the meeting was adjourned, CPM councillor K M Latheef allegedly pushed BJP’s P V Suresh, making things worse.
The CPM members accused the municipality of polluting Kakkathodu through its drains, affecting drinking water in Keezhattoor and Koovode. They said the ruling UDF’s claim of a garbage-free Taliparamba was false.
UDF councillors responded by accusing the CPM of opposing the state government’s ‘Nava Keralam’ waste-free initiative. The argument intensified, leading Municipal Chairperson Murshida Kongayi to adjourn the meeting.
CPM councillors also said that even though officials fined the hotel, no action was being taken against other polluters. Meanwhile, BJP councillor Suresh said both UDF and LDF were ignoring the waste problem. After he was shoved, BJP members staged a protest. Councillor K Vatsarajan said they had filed a complaint with the chairperson and secretary.
