Kozhikode MCH medical negligence case: Harshina to resume protest seeking justice

Harshina, who had earlier protested against alleged medical negligence at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital, will restart her protest seeking justice. Backed by the Samara Samrakshana Samithi, she will stage a one-day token protest in front of the Kozhikode District Collectorate on July 29.
The decision was announced by the Harshina Samara Vedi on Wednesday, citing inaction in the legal proceedings. The case has been at a standstill after the accused obtained a stay order from the Kerala High Court last year, just before trial was set to begin at the Kunnamangalam court based on a chargesheet filed by the Medical College Police.
The chargesheet alleged that a surgical instrument, a pair of forceps, was left inside Harshina’s stomach during a C-section surgery in 2017. Samithi chairman Dinesh Perumanna criticised the state government and prosecution for failing to challenge the stay in the High Court for over a year.
Harshina had developed serious health issues following the surgery, and later discovered the foreign object inside her body. She launched an indefinite protest in May 2023 in front of the Government Medical College Hospital and ended it after 104 days, once the police submitted the chargesheet against four medical personnel.
Dr CK Rameshan, Dr M Shahana, nurses M Rehana and KG Manju are named as the accused in the case. Harshina continues to demand accountability and fair compensation from the state government.
