Koothattukulam: The LDF lost control of the Koothattukulam Municipality after a no-confidence motion brought by the UDF against Chairperson Vijaya Sivan (CPM) was passed with 13 votes, including the support of CPM rebel councillor Kala Raju.

The motion, which was moved against Chairperson Vijaya Sivan and Vice-Chairperson Sunny Kuriakose, was taken up for discussion on Tuesday. The debate on the motion against Vijaya Sivan began at 11 am and ended in her removal from office. The motion against Vice-Chairperson Sunny Kuriakose is also scheduled for Tuesday.

Speaking after the vote, Kala Raju said, “I voted according to my conscience. No horse-trading took place. The crisis I faced should not happen to any other woman. The LDF brought this defeat upon themselves.”

“LDF abstained from voting. This is political horse-trading and financial corruption. It will impact the poor as it will delay grants and projects meant for them,” Vijaya Sivan told Onmanorama. She added that a party whip had been issued to Kala Raju. Raju, however, claims she never received it.

Kala Raju had previously accused CPM members of abducting and pressuring her to abstain from voting on the no-confidence motion. She alleged that the incident, which occurred on January 18, was carried out with the knowledge of the CPM area secretary.
