Pattambi: Minister Roshy Augustine will throw open the first phase of the Nilayoram EMS Park on Monday at 4 pm. Muhammed Muhsin MLA, will preside over the function. The first phase of the park has been completed with ₹90 lakhs from the MLA’s asset development fund, while an additional ₹50 lakhs has been sanctioned for the second phase.
A committee chaired by the District Collector and comprising the MLA, municipal chairperson, tahsildar, irrigation executive engineer and District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) secretary has been constituted to oversee the completion and opening of the first phase.
Tender procedures for the park’s day-to-day operations have been initiated, said Muhammed Muhsin MLA. The first phase includes infrastructure facilities and children’s rides. Once operational, the facilities will be further enhanced. Plans are in place to host fairs featuring products from Kudumbashree and tribal communities, aiming to develop the park into a site with tourism potential, he added.
Transformation from waste dumping spot
The park has been established on reclaimed puramboke and encroached land. Previously a dumping ground in the heart of the town, the site will now become waste-free with the park’s opening. Encroachments along the stretch between Pattambi Guruvayurappan Temple and Nambram Road were cleared in 2021.
In a joint effort, the municipality and the revenue department identified and reclaimed land encroached by private parties. Less than an acre was made available for the park by demolishing illegal structures and removing waste heaps. Currently, Pattambi town lacks open spaces for public leisure and the new park is expected to fill this void.
