Thenjipalam: Accidents caused by vehicles ramming into others from behind are on the rise along the National Highway here.

 Just the other day, two people were killed at Paingottur Matil when a mini-lorry crashed into a truck from behind. About a week earlier, an autorickshaw had collided with a parked car from behind, roughly 400 metres south of the same spot. Several other accidents have also occurred due to vehicles hitting the divider in the middle of the six-lane road.

Although vehicle parking is strictly prohibited on the six-lane highway, there are instances where vehicles stop due to technical issues. In such cases, warning signs should be placed to alert oncoming traffic. However, there are complaints that such safety measures are often ignored. There is also a growing demand for boards displaying safety guidelines for the renovated highway.

Residents have further urged authorities to make the installed CCTV cameras operational at the earliest to improve monitoring and enforcement.
