Lying down on your bed after a long day of hard work is probably the best feeling that one enjoys in a day. However, more than a thing that is used to sleep on, mattresses have now become an inevitable part of interior design and home décor. Besides comfort, mattresses are a thing of luxury that completes the overall look of the bedrooms.

From single and double to king and queen, mattresses are available in many sizes. The king-size mattresses that are six and a half feet long and six and a half wide are the most luxurious ones on the market. However, these measurements could differ for different brands. Meanwhile, a single cot mattress is three feet long and a double cot is four feet long. The price depends upon the size of the mattress.

Cotton mattress
In the olden days, homemade mattresses were stuffed with leaves and feathers. However, when mattresses began to be made commercially, cotton stuffed beds became popular. Soon, it got replaced with rubber foam. When the production of coir items soared, the rubberised foam was used as stuffing inside the mattresses.

In 1997, with the inception of RUBCO, rubber foam beds and rubberised coir foam became popular. Even today, most mattresses that are available in the market are stuffed with foam and rubberised coir. Poly urethane foam mattresses too are easily available. As the price and quality of the rubber and foam materials go up, it would be reflected in the cost of the mattresses too. Merchants of branded mattresses say that the price of mattresses goes up to 3 -4 % every three or four months.

Spring mattress
Spring mattresses are often enjoyed for their springy and bouncy nature. It is fun sitting or bouncing on these mattresses. Moreover, spring mattresses are incredibly comfortable too. Spring mattresses have in fact become the superstars in modern abodes. Even though the price is a bit on the steeper side, many prefer spring mattresses as they are extremely comfortable and assure a good night’s sleep.

Up to nine springs would be added to a square foot of the mattress. Besides, there would be a layer of nylon, foam and cotton on top of the springs. Spring mattresses in five, six, eight and ten-inch thicknesses are available on the market. Even though spring mattresses had been popular in foreign countries, it's only been a decade since Indians fell in love with them. Spring mattresses are often purchased in bulk while furnishing the interiors of flats or apartment complexes or hotel rooms.

Affordable range
Locally made mattresses that are easy on the pocket too are available in the market. These are mostly made of soft cotton. However, one couldn’t expect any guarantees or warranty cards like the branded ones. Such lightweight mattresses are suitable for those who keep shifting houses or stay in hostels.

Special beds for patients
Orthopaedic mattresses that are thicker than the regular ones are prescribed for those who suffer from back pain and body ache. As these beds do not shrink or bounce when you lie down, the body is well supported.

Stylish beds
Cots play a pivotal role in determining the look of the room as it is often the beds that take most of the space. The nature, colour and position of the beds definitely influence the overall look and ambience of the bedrooms. The colour of the mattresses and the bed covers should match the walls and the curtain fittings.

Affordable or locally made mattresses are often sold at amazing discounts during a sale. As the spring mattresses do not compromise on the quality, they are never part of these seasonal sales or discount offers. Most sellers try to woo customers by offering free pillows and bed covers.

As branded mattresses became a trend, there are takers for matching bed covers, bed sheets, flannel and bed protectors too.
