The walls of this house are made using high-quality laterite stones purchased from Kannur.

Mini’s brand-new house in Moorkanad in Thrissur, Kerala is a beautiful abode that lets in natural light and air in abundance. The construction had begun during the lockdown period. Noted architect Shantilal of Costford who has designed hundreds of eco-friendly homes across Kerala has designed this fabulous house too.

The structure has been constructed by leaving enough space for the front and the back yards. The plot, meanwhile, boasts of natural greenery that adds an incredible charm against the earthy tone of the structure. The elevation features a mesmerizing blend of traditional and modern styles. There are balconies in the front and the back sides with traditional hand railings. Interestingly, these have been made in metal finish.

Designed in 1620 sqft, this splendid abode has a sit-out, living and dining areas, kitchen with a work area and two bedrooms on the ground floor. Meanwhile, there is a bedroom and a multi-utility hall in the upper floor.

The walls are made using high-quality laterite stones purchased from Kannur. The use of concrete is minimised. The walls are plastered using a unique mixture of sand and lime. Meanwhile, the roof is constructed in the filler slab technology which helps in reducing the heat inside the house. The interiors exude the rustic charm of the exposed laterite stones. The interior walls are plastered using a mixture of mud, jaggery and ink nut. So, the expenses for cement plastering and painting could be avoided.

The interiors are designed in an open theme allowing natural sunshine and cool breeze to reach every corner of the house. The entrance door opens to the formal living area. Meanwhile, the pooja space has been arranged by building designer niches on the laterite wall.

The double-height ceiling and the pergola skylight brings in lots of natural sunshine into the house. Moreover, this acts as a space that connects both floors.

The metal staircase in the dining area is compact and stylish. A small sitting space too has been arranged in the first landing on the staircase.

The bedrooms are simple yet elegant. The bath-attached bedrooms have in-built wardrobes for storage.

Even though the initial budget was estimated at Rs 20 lakh, it had overshot a bit as the cost of the building materials soared after the lockdown. The construction of this amazing abode, including the structure and the furnishing, was completed on a budget of Rs 25 lakh.

The family says that there is no need to switch on the fan or light during the daytime as cool breeze and natural sunshine enter the house abundantly.
