Lavish abode on 5-cent plot: How smart house design cracked space-crunch riddle

The homeowners of a spacious house built on a small plot in Chalakudy, Thrissur, share the details of their home. The 5-cent plot is located near lush green paddy fields, with houses on either side. Their requirement was a Kerala-style house. The design maximizes views of the paddy fields and allows good ventilation.

The sloping roof with multiple layers of tiles is a striking exterior feature. Meanwhile, red brick cladding and terracotta jali work adorn the exterior walls. The courtyard is paved with Thanthur stone and grass. A traditional tulsi thara (Tulsi choura pillar) is featured in the courtyard. The sit-out boasts an attractive combination of red brick cladding and terracotta jali work.

The ceiling here is finished with exposed cement. The ground floor comprises a porch, sit-out, living room, dining area, courtyard, kitchen, work area, and two bedrooms. The upper floor features two bedrooms and a balcony. The total area is 2110 square feet.

The TV unit in the living room is highlighted with wallpaper. A custom-made blue sofa adds to the decor. Several mural paintings are incorporated into the interior design, contributing to a traditional ambience.

The heart of the home is the dining hall. The dining table has a wood and glass finish. The wall is highlighted with brick cladding. A double-height courtyard is located adjacent to the dining area, featuring artificial grass and indoor plants, along with a swing cot. The staircase is designed to minimize space usage, with tiled steps and GI pipe and wood finish railings.

The kitchen cabinets have a multi-wood and laminate finish. The counter is topped with Nano White, and the floor is covered with wooden-hued tiles. Backsplash designer tiles enhance kitchen's aesthetic appeal. The four bedrooms are designed for functionality. Headside walls are adorned with upholstery. Each bedroom includes a wardrobe, dressing space, and an attached bathroom.
