In a unique medical feat, a newborn with severe haemoglobin deficiency was brought back to life by the neonatal department of a private hospital here. Babu and his pregnant wife Beera belonging to Pathanamthitta had approached the Caritas Hospital at Thellakom in Kottayam after it was found that their baby in the womb lacked normal movement.
Examination by expert doctors at the hospital found that an emergency caesarian was necessary and the procedure was soon conducted by a gynaecologist. The newborn had a haemoglobin level of a mere 1.8 grams. Usually, babies born with a haemoglobin level of less than 2 grams do not survive. This acute condition is known as fetomaternal hemorrhage.
It was the first child of Babu and Beera and the baby has been named ‘Angel’. The infant and mother are now fine and have been discharged, said hospital authorities.
The medical team that saved the life of baby Angel included head of the Neonatal Department, Dr Sajan Thomas, gynaecologist, Dr D Reji, Dr Deepa Sajan, Dr Ann Joseph, Dr Blessy Verghese, the nursing team and the transfusion team.
