The holy month of Ramadan is expected to commence on March 1 this year and conclude on March 29 if the moon is sighted on the evening of February 28. If not, it will reportedly begin the next day. Muslims worldwide observe their fast from dawn to sunset, breaking it with the iftar meal at sunset. To ensure that you remain healthy during fasting, a couple of essential checks can be done to ensure your blood pressure, weight, blood sugar levels, and hydration are at the right levels. According to the American Hospital in Dubai, here are a few things that can help experience a safe fasting period:
1) Liver function tests
The test, also known as the AST/ALT, checks whether your liver health is normal. It is a simple blood test which can be taken without fasting. However, doctors might ask you to avoid certain medicines and alcohol before taking them. It is usually quick and painless, and you can get results quickly.

2) CBC test for blood cells
It measures the number of red, white and platelet cells in your blood to determine its health. This is also done through a blood test without fasting and is painless. Poor haemoglobin in blood, as per this test, can be an indication of anaemia and can make fasting risky. Similarly, low white blood cell count and platelet count can also make it unhealthy to fast. Ensure you analyse the CBC test results with a doctor to properly understand how fast you can or cannot fast.
3) Urea/Creatinine test
This is a blood test to check how well the kidneys are functioning. High levels of BUN or blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, BUN/Creatinine ratio suggest poor health and can worsen your health with fasting. Therefore, consult a doctor for advice on correctly interpreting the results.

4) Other tests
Lipid panel test to check cardiovascular problems, an HbA1c test which reveals blood sugar levels, a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or TSH test to find any thyroid problems, a Vitamin B12 test to detect any nervous issues or weakness and a Vitamin D test to see whether you have enough of it are also important tests to be performed before you start the Ramadan fast.
