'Protein' mango kulfi in the market: How to eat such desserts right?

Mail This Article
A few days ago, a leading food brand launched a high-protein kulfi in India and also revealed its plan to bring more such products to market, including sandwiches, coffee, parathas, and snacks. According to them, the newly introduced kulfi has just 57 calories and contains 10 grams of protein, while also being lactose-free, low-fat, and prebiotic. Kulfi, a traditional Indian frozen dessert, is often referred to as 'Indian ice cream' as well.
Globally, protein ice creams have become increasingly popular, especially among health-conscious consumers, and most manufacturers claim their products contain more than 10 grams of protein per serving. Milk, whey, and plant protein are the bases for many of these desserts, which they also quote as the protein sources. However, does it make them extremely healthy? How can you enjoy them for their health benefits without compromising your fitness regimen? Here's what Cleveland Clinic dietitian Julia Zumpano said during a podcast.
The dietician, who said ice creams are neither healthy nor unhealthy, explains that what matters is the quantity of the ice cream and how frequently you eat it, regardless of whether it's a 'healthy' variety or not. Having the dessert multiple times a week can be problematic, but having it once in a few months shouldn't load you with many calories. An ice cream is a high-calorie, high-sugar dish, regardless of whether it is promoted as low-fat or low-sugar, she explains. Regarding how to eat 'high-protein' ice-creams right, here's what she said:
1) Do not rely on high-protein desserts to meet your protein needs. They can be part of your intake, but not the primary source.
2) When you add a protein to your food, the idea is that it makes you feel full faster and eat less. Therefore, if you are consuming a high-protein version of ice cream, you should eat it in moderation.
3) Keep your servings moderate and add healthy nuts and berries as healthy toppings.
4) Homemade cottage cheese - honey ice cream can be a healthy protein ice cream, high in natural protein, with more than 20 grams per serving.
5) Stick to basic ice cream flavours like vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate if you want to consume healthily.
'Amul' had more than 5K search volume on Google Trends after the launch of its protein mango kulfi.
