Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease suffered by millions of people around the world. It slowly affects the speech, balance, sense of perception, and motor abilities of the patient. Although Parkinson’s disease mostly affects people over 60, its symptoms may appear in youngsters, too. In an interview with ETV Bharat, Dr. Ramesh Babu, senior consultant and neuro physician at the Apollo Hospital, Vishakhapatnam, explains the seven early signs of Parkinson’s Disease.
Shivering
Shivering is a symptom that is often dismissed as an age-related problem. It starts as a slight shivering of hands while holding a cup of tea or resting your palms on your lap. It might not be painful initially, but the shivering worsens later, severely affecting regular life.
Changed handwriting
The handwriting of patients with Parkinson’s Disease may change gradually. Their handwriting gets smaller than before. Later, it becomes so tiny that it is almost illegible. The brain’s inability to control motor skills causes this symptom.
Slowed movements
Slowed movement is a key sign of Parkinson’s Disease. People with this condition may struggle to do daily chores or even regular activities like brushing or buttoning up their shirts.
Muscle stiffness
Rigidity and stiffness of muscles in the hands and legs are also symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. This wouldn’t subside even if you stretch or work out regularly. Gradually, the stiffness of muscles would affect your ability to walk or move your hands.
Losing balance
Parkinson’s patients will lose control and balance of their bodies, especially in the later stages of the disease. They may struggle to stand up straight or might have a bend when they sit. Moreover, they become unsteady and lose balance while walking.
Affects the sense of smell
Changes in the ability to smell are one of the early signs of Parkinson’s Disease. These might appear years before the disease affects motor abilities. The patient may not be able to smell coffee, flowers, spices, or anything with a strong odour.
Changes in facial expression
A serious facial expression, even when the person is in a good mood, may be a sign of Parkinson’s Disease. The stiffness and rigidity of facial muscles cause it. Besides these, the patient’s voice may also change. Some people experience sleeplessness when they have Parkinson’s Disease.
Although proper treatment is not available for Parkinson’s Disease, early detection of these symptoms may help the patient manage them properly. Doctors might prescribe certain medicines, therapy, or even changes in diet to regulate or ease the symptoms. This helps the patient’s family prepare emotionally and financially to face the situation. Dr. Ramesh Babu urges you to visit a neurologist as soon as you notice these symptoms.
