Everyone reading this article has, at some point, met a doctor or benefited from their care. To honour and express gratitude to the country's medical fraternity, India observes Doctors’ Day on July 1 every year. This date was chosen in remembrance of the multifaceted Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, as it marks both his birth and death anniversaries (July 1, 1882 – July 1, 1962). A freedom fighter and the second Chief Minister of Bengal, Dr Roy is widely regarded as the architect of modern Bengal. He remains the only doctor in India to have been awarded the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour. He also remains one of the few to have earned both the prestigious medical degrees, FRCS and MRCP.

Dr Roy played a pivotal role in establishing several prominent medical institutions and hospitals in India. He was also instrumental in the constitution of both the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Medical Council of India. His lifelong mission was to make quality healthcare accessible to all.

Across the globe, many countries observe Doctors’ Day at the national level. In the United States, for instance, the tradition dates back to 1933. In India, following a proposal by the IMA, the Union government officially declared July 1 as National Doctors’ Day in 1991.

The theme for this year, `Hands that comfort, hearts that care,' highlights the importance of balancing medical knowledge and expertise with empathy. Alongside expressing gratitude to the doctors, this day also serves to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by healthcare providers, especially in the evolving circumstances. We have all witnessed the sacrifices of frontline workers, who worked tirelessly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Doctors’ Day also marks an opportunity to spread awareness about health protection, immunity and the responsible use of medication. At the same time, this occasion calls for collective support from all sections of society to uplift the healthcare sector. Just as Dr BC Roy stood as an example of dedication and service, India needs more such doctors to inspire future generations. Let this Doctors’ Day inspire our youth to pursue a career in medical science and serve society with compassion, commitment, and professionalism, thereby scripting a new chapter in India’s healthcare journey.
