The appendix is a small, tube–shaped pouch attached to the large intestine, located in the lower right side of the abdomen. Appendix cancer, which was generally seen among the elderly, is now diagnosed in youngsters too. Studies suggest that appendix cancer has been common among millennials due to lifestyle factors, dietary habits, obesity, changes in gut bacteria and undergoing diagnostic scans like the CT scan regularly.

Genetic diseases like lynch syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis, too, may increase the risk of appendix cancer. Persistent infection in the oesophagus due to Crohn’s disease and untreated viral infections could cause changes in the appendix cells. Besides, smoking and an unhealthy diet comprising processed food and low fibre food are contributing factors to appendix cancer. Meanwhile, long-term usage of antacids and a history of gastrointestinal cancer can also trigger cancer in the appendix.

Symptoms
Persistent pain in the lower abdomen, abdominal bloating, unexplained weight loss without any dietary changes or exercising, vomiting, heaviness in the lower abdomen and pelvic discomfort are some of the symptoms of appendix cancer. The risk of appendix cancer could be lowered by controlling body weight, following a healthy diet that includes vegetables, fruits and whole grains, limiting the intake of sugar and processed food and by quitting alcohol and smoking. Seeking treatment for Crohn’s disease or chronic gastritis and regularly following up with your healthcare practitioner could be helpful. Those who have a family history of gastrointestinal cancer should undergo genetic screening and other tests to rule out the risk.
