Health risks: Railways to issue ID cards to food vendors; know more

To prevent vendors from selling low-quality and adulterated food items in railway stations, the Railway Ministry has urged all its zones to implement standardised identity cards for recognised vendors. The railways stated that the sale of substandard food in trains is affecting passenger health, and the move aims to curb such practices. "The Railway Board's office has examined the issue of unauthorised vending in trains and stations, and the following is advised for implementation with immediate effect to curb unauthorised vending," the circular to all zones said.
What will the new IDs have?
1) Name
2) Aadhaar number
3) Medical fitness certificate and its validity
4) Unit of deployment
5) Police verification date and validity
6) Name of the licensee firm
7) Signature of the station superintendent/station manager of the respective station or IRCTC's authorised official.
The card will be issued in the name of vendors/helpers/staff only after due process. Reserve vendors will also be permitted to manage units in the event of a shortage or non-turn-up, if any. Those leaving the job are also expected to surrender their IDs to the licensee. The records of staff, vendors, and helpers are also supposed to be kept at the station or on the train, said the ministry.
