In a major medical milestone, three-foot-tall Simi from Kerala’s Malappuram has given birth to a baby boy. The 36-year-old, who is the wife of Marancherry native Pragesh, delivered the baby a few days ago at the CIMAR Hospital in Kanimangalam, Thrissur. The baby weighed 1.69 kg at the time of birth and is healthy. Meanwhile, Dr KK Gopinathan, who led the couple’s treatment, stated that it is rare for a woman of her height to give birth.

Challenges she faced
Short height and weak bones were the significant challenges faced by Simi, according to her doctors. Tamil Nadu native Kamakshi, who is 3.5 feet tall, was the shortest woman to give birth in India, so far. Meanwhile, Simi's height is 3.1 feet. Dr Gopinathan said that Simi’s physical disabilities posed multiple challenges in her journey to motherhood. The baby was delivered via C-section. Simi’s husband, Pragesh, is visually impaired.

Why dwarfism affects pregnancy
According to the Mayo Clinic, women with disproportionate dwarfism can have breathing issues during their labour. Apparently, a C-section is always required for their labour as the shape of their pelvis does not generally support natural vaginal delivery. The shorter torso and spinal abnormalities, the strain on their heart and the genetic risk of the baby inheriting the condition can also pose challenges to pregnancy and delivery for women with an extremely short stature.
