How to do safe breastfeeding?
Mail This Article
Breastmilk is naturally produced by mothers after delivery to meet the nutritional needs of their newborn children. It contains protein, fats, vitamins, as well as antibodies that are required for the baby. Colostrum, which is the first form of milk produced by the mother immediately or a few days after giving birth, is rich in protein and immunoglobulins. However, news of babies dying after choking on breastmilk is quite alarming and extremely saddening. New parents often get worried listening to such terrible news.
There are multiple opinions about how long a child should be breastfed. However, the World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months. Meanwhile, health and nutrition experts say that a child could be breastfed until he/she turn two. He/she could be breastfed even after that if the mother chooses to.
Holding babies properly is important to breastfeeding them safely. You could breastfeed your child while sitting or lying down. However, sitting while breastfeeding is the safest method. The risk of a baby choking on breastmilk is high while lying down.
Keep these tips in mind to safely breastfeed your child
Sit straight on a chair while breastfeeding your child; you could use a pillow to support your back. Ensure that both the nipple and the areola are in the child’s mouth so that he/she can feed properly. If the baby doesn’t latch properly, then it might be extremely painful for the mother. Women who have flat nipples should pull them out using a nipple puller before feeding the child. Hold the child in a way that his/her body and head align in a straight line. The baby’s stomach should be pressed against the mother’s body. Health experts suggest feeding on one breast completely before moving on to the next breast.
1) Do not feed the baby when he/she is asleep
2) Gently tap on the baby’s back to release the gas after feeding
3) Make sure that the baby is not suffocating while feeding
4) There is no need to give drinking water to the child, especially in the first six months, if he/she is being fed properly. So, the mother should keep herself well hydrated by drinking lots of water
5) Mother’s mental and emotional state may affect milk production. So, having a peaceful and emotionally healthy atmosphere is key to enjoying a beautiful and fulfilling breastfeeding phase
6) Breastfeeding mothers should eat nutrient-rich food and should include whole grains, pulses, green leafy vegetables and high fibre food in their diet
