A recent study has found that individuals with blood group A have a significantly higher risk of suffering a stroke compared to those with other blood groups. Scientists at the School of Medicine, University of Maryland, conducted the research. The conclusion comes from a meta-analysis of 48 genetic studies involving 17,000 stroke patients under the age of 60. According to the findings, people with blood group A have a 16% higher chance of experiencing a stroke before the age of 60 compared to individuals with other blood groups. Conversely, people with blood group O were found to have a 12% lower risk of stroke.

The report explains that individuals with blood groups other than O tend to have higher levels of specific proteins such as von Willebrand factor and factor VIII, which play a role in blood clotting. Researchers suggest that an increase in these proteins may raise the risk of stroke. Genetic factors are believed to contribute to this risk, although the study emphasises that not all people with blood group A will suffer a stroke at a young age. Lifestyle factors, other medical conditions and environmental influences also play a significant role.

Risk factors and prevention
People with high blood pressure, a history of smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle or a family history of heart disease or stroke should be particularly cautious. To reduce the risk of stroke, experts recommend regular exercise, controlling blood sugar and cholesterol levels, maintaining a healthy weight, following a balanced diet rich in lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, quitting smoking, and having regular health and blood pressure checks.
