Angamaly Diaries fame actress Anna Rajan recently wrote on her social media page about how she has been undergoing treatment for the autoimmune condition 'Hashimoto thyroiditis.' Anna said that she has been working really hard to lose weight and regain her confidence, while silently handling cyberbullying about her weight gain. The disease, which disrupts the immune system's ability to protect the body from viruses and bacteria, causes the immune system to attack the thyroid gland.
It also results in many bodily issues like depression, tiredness, constipation, many skin and hair changes and more, also causes weight gain, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. In those who suffer from the condition, their bodies produce antibodies that attack cells in their thyroid gland, causing it to become scarred, rubbery, and firm, and to produce insufficient thyroid hormone.
Who does it affect?
1) Women, mainly middle-aged ladies. In some people, it begins during pregnancy, and in others, it improves with pregnancy and worsens after delivery.
2) While the specific gene that causes it is not clear yet, it tends to occur in those with a family history.
3) It's often found in people with excessive iodine intake.
4) People exposed to excessive environmental radiation.
5) Those exposed to various infections and stress.
