Gooseberry, known for its medicinal properties since ancient times, has also been endorsed by modern medicine. Several studies have confirmed its health benefits, including its ability to regulate cholesterol. A meta-analysis of 6 studies found that gooseberry helps reduce total cholesterol and bad cholesterol (LDL), while increasing good cholesterol (HDL), thereby improving the lipid profile. The findings were recently published in the journal Science Direct.

Improves cardiac health
Gooseberry is rich in polyphenols and antioxidants, including Emblicanin A and B and Pedunculagin. These compounds prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, a key factor in the development of atherosclerosis and plaque formation. By inhibiting this process, gooseberry helps reduce the risk of arterial plaque buildup, thereby ensuring cardiac health.

Reduces inflammation
Chronic inflammation is a major contributor to cardiovascular disease. Gooseberry’s anti-inflammatory properties help lower levels of C-reactive protein (CRP).  Reduced inflammation improves heart function and helps prevent cardiac conditions.

Enhances Endothelial function
Gooseberry also supports endothelial function, which is essential for maintaining healthy blood vessels. Improved endothelial function enhances blood circulation and reduces the risk of heart disease.

Consume gooseberries the right way
Gooseberries should be included in food in different ways. To improve cardiac health and reduce cholesterol, gooseberries should be consumed in a way that preserves their nutritional value, without mixing with sugar or other additives. Take care to have fresh gooseberries. This provides plenty of Vitamin C and Polyphenols. This will offer antioxidant benefits and help reduce cholesterol.

Gooseberry juice
Gooseberry juice is a source of antioxidants and polyphenols. Drinking unsweetened gooseberry juice has many nutritional benefits. However, those with health issues should first consult their doctors before making it a habit.

Avoid consuming gooseberries this way
Although gooseberries are healthy, certain preparations can reduce their benefits. Gooseberries preserved in sugar syrup add unnecessary calories and sugar, which reduces their cholesterol-lowering and heart-protective properties.

Gooseberry supplements
Gooseberry is also available as capsules, tablets, and powders. However, these supplements are effective only when used correctly and under medical supervision, as they may not be suitable for everyone.

Who should avoid gooseberry
Individuals with high blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, those taking blood-thinning medications, pregnant and lactating women, and those with kidney disorders should avoid consuming gooseberries. Even in healthy individuals, excessive intake can lead to acidity, dehydration, or digestive issues. It is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional before making gooseberries a regular part of your diet.
