Cloth napkins or diapers: What is better for babies? Leading gynaecologist explains

Many moms around us are extremely busy, juggling their careers, taking care of their kids, and balancing their own relationships. Unlike in the past, there aren't many people around them to help with their children either. This can be especially challenging if the children are infants or babies still in their diaper stage. A question that often arises in mothers' minds is whether a cloth napkin or a diaper is better for children. Kerala's leading gynaecologist, Dr Marie Simon of Amrita Urban Health Centre, Kaloor in Ernakulam, explains:
What's better?
According to Dr Marie, at least in the initial stages after a baby is born, cloth napkins are better than diapers. She explains, "Yes, it's difficult to clean or dispose of them, but they are healthier. Just buy soft cotton cloth, stitch them into triangular shapes to tie on the baby," she explains. If you are not in a situation to use them, diapers are fine, the doctor points out, if used properly. "However, make sure that they are changed in proper intervals," she says.
Do not use tissues
At times, mothers use tissue paper to clean babies' privates. Dr Marie says it's better to avoid them. "This is because small bits of this paper can tend to get trapped in the skin folds of babies. This can, in turn, cause skin irritations or infections," she says.
What to do for redness, puss or bubbles
Mothers might notice slight blood-stained discharge from the genital areas of newborn female babies. Many get scared when they see them, but the doctor says there is nothing to worry about. "This is a discharge that happens due to the presence of the mother's hormones in the baby. However, it is temporary, and the discharge actually proves that the baby has a uterus," she says. If you notice puss, bubbles or redness in the private areas of babies, parents can take them to a gynaecologist or other doctors. "They can prescribe an anti-fungal cream for the problem," she explains.
