AI has entered numerous facets of our lives within a short time, and now, hospitals in Kerala have also started integrating the technology into their ambulances. Most recently, Kochi's Rajagiri Hospital flagged off an AI-powered ambulance to ensure expert medical assistance to patients in emergency situations. They joined forces with the US-based software company ATIAN to develop the AI-powered ambulance.

How they help
The AI technology ensures the patient is under the close observation of expert doctors from the moment the stretcher is loaded into the ambulance. The AI algorithm and the two–way camera setup in the ambulance constantly monitor the patient’s heart rate, blood pressure, and blood oxygen level. Live updates of these readings will be available on the doctor’s screen at the hospital. The doctors would then be able to analyse the patient’s condition and give instructions to the medical team in the ambulance in case emergency treatment, procedures, or the administration of medicines are required.  Rajagiri executive director Fr. Johnson Vazhappilli said that AI technology would help turn transportation time into valuable patient care time.

First in Sri Lanka
Interestingly, the world's first AI ambulance was launched in India's neighbouring country, Sri Lanka, way back in 2023. The same year, Caritas Hospital and the Institute of Health Sciences in Kottayam launched a Telemedic AI Emergency Department on wheels - C RATS AI. ZENZO also launched India's first AI-powered ambulance network in 2024. A few months ago, Kerala's KIMSHEALTH also launched an AI-powered ambulance. It monitors patients in real time, enabling the medical team to make quick decisions and deliver faster care.
