Is it advisable to take complete rest during pregnancy?

It is a wrong notion that once you are pregnant you should take bed rest. Bed rest is required only if it is absolutely necessary. Sherin Abraham who is 26 years old and is 3 months pregnant feels tired most of the time. She works at a bank. Her family insists that she stop working and take complete bed rest and she is confused as to what she should do.

There are different ways to take bed rest. When someone is completely resting on the bed, then it is complete bed rest. Next is modified bed rest in which you can take rest for some time in bed, take a walk, go to the loo, and again come back to bed. Another thing is to reduce your workload. It is better to avoid too much walking, too much standing, carrying weight, as well as household chores. Bed rest is recommended when the pregnant woman has heart problems, high blood pressure, low-lying placenta, uterine cavity problems, or growth retardation for the baby.

There is no need for complete bed rest. There are many disadvantages to taking complete bed rest. When a pregnant woman remains inactive, there are chances of blood clotting in the veins of her leg which can lead to a dangerous condition called pulmonary embolism. When you are inactive, it can also lead to depression and anxiety.

Muscles might become weak. Since you are working in a bank, you might have to sit for long hours at the desk which can cause back pain. So make sure to use a chair that offers support for your neck and back. Remember to get up and take a walk in between. You can give small exercises to the neck, hands, and legs. Wash your face now and then. If you are feeling overly tired, consult a doctor.
