Thiruvananthapuram: The CPM party congress has decided against allying with the Congress either in West Bengal or in any other state for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, CPM Politburo member M A Baby has asserted amid reports that the national party may fight the polls in the eastern state along side its former arch-rival there.

He was responding to KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran’s statement that the Congress was willing to join hands with the CPM even in Kerala for the Lok Sabha elections.

"I believe that the Congress and the UDF have the strength to take on the LDF in Kerala today. There is no need to align with the CPM. I am not sure if Congress is in such a bad situation where Mullappally had to make the statement,” he said.

The Congress leader had said that the party could talk to the CPM if the ruling party laid down arms. He had also charged that the BJP and the CPM were working together in the state. Mullappally had told reporters on Saturday the Congress is ready to work with any secular democratic party at the national level against the BJP and the RSS

"Mullappally clearly knows that we are against the policies of the Congress. The Left parties are not only against communal politics, but also aim to rectify the flawed economic policies that are against workers and farmers," Baby clarified.

"The seat-sharing talks in Bengal are in the initial stages. The main aim is to defeat the BJP and the TMC. It is difficult to predict which government will come to power after the elections," he noted.

Party congress refers to a general meeting of a political party.
