Veteran Tamil director-screenwriter Mahendran is dead

Chennai: Noted Tamil filmmaker J Mahendran passed away early on Tuesday morning here at the Apollo Hospital. He was 79.

The news was confirmed by his son John Mahendran on social media.

Mahendran was admitted to hospital due to age-related ailments.

Mahendran made a mark as a screenplay writer before turning to direction. He debuted as an official screenwriter with 1966 movie 'Nam Moovar'. Mahendran also penned the script for Sivaji Ganesan’s 'Nirai Kudam' (1969).

His first directorial was 'Mullum Malarum' (1978) starring Rajinikanth, Sarath Babu and Sobha in the lead roles. Later, Mahendran and Rajinikanth worked together in many films including 'Kaali' and 'Johnny', both released in 1980.

'Kaali' was directed by IV Sasi and scripted by Mahendran. 'Johnny' was both written and directed by Mahendran.
