News@7: Death sentence for Greeshma, lifer for Sanjay Roy & Trump's first day back

1. The Neyyattinkara Additional Sessions Court on Monday sentenced 24-year-old SS Greeshma to death for the murder of her boyfriend, Sharon Raj, by poisoning him with a pesticide-laced ayurvedic decoction. Greeshma's uncle, Nirmalakumaran Nair, the third accused in the case, was sentenced to three years in prison. Greeshma's mother Sindhu, the second accused was acquitted for want of evidence. According to the prosecution, Sharon was lured to Greeshma’s house in Ramavarman-chirai, Tamil Nadu, on October 14, 2022, where he was given an ayurvedic tonic laced with paraquat, a highly toxic herbicide. He succumbed to multiple organ failure 11 days later, on October 25, 2022.
2. The Sealdah court in Kolkata on Monday sentenced former civic volunteer Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for raping and murdering a trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Judge Anirban Das said the crime did not fall under the "rarest of the rare" category as justification for not giving the death penalty to the convict. Additionally, the court also directed the state to pay a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the family of the deceased doctor, which they reportedly refused.
The body of the 31-year-old doctor was found on the third floor of the seminar hall of the state-run hospital on August 9, last year. Roy was arrested the next day.
3. The 47th US President Donald Trump vowed to impose strict immigration limits on his first day back in office, in an address to supporters in Washington. Experts, however, note that such an operation would require years to execute and entail significant costs. Trump also promised a flurry of executive actions concerning energy and tariffs soon after taking the oath of office. He has said he will pardon many of the more than 1,500 people charged in connection with the Jan. 6, 2021, attack. Trump is the first US president since the 19th century to win a second term after losing the White House.
4. Hamas released three Israeli hostages and Israel released 90 Palestinian prisoners on Sunday, the first day of a ceasefire suspending the 15-month-old Isreal - Palestine war. The truce allowed Palestinians to return to bombed-out neighborhoods to begin rebuilding their lives, while relief trucks delivered much-needed aid. Elsewhere in Gaza, crowds cheered Hamas fighters who emerged from hiding. More than 47,000 Palestinians have since been killed in Israeli attacks, according to medical officials in Gaza. Nearly the entire 2.3 million population of Gaza is homeless. Around 400 Israeli soldiers have also died.
5. The Uttarakhand Cabinet approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) manual during a meeting at the state secretariat on Monday. The dates for the implementation will be announced soon. As per reports, the cabinet approved the manual after making partial amendments to the rules recently prepared for implementation of the UCC. The UCC will create a unified legal framework for all religious communities in areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and maintenance.
