The deadly stampede unfolded at the rally of Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at Velumchamypuram in Karur, three days after the Madras High Court made strong observations regarding public meetings being convened by political parties.
The HC on Wednesday impleaded the TN Chief Secretary and Home Secretary as a follow-up to an earlier order, which directed the state to enforce rules to ask political parties to deposit a fixed amount while seeking permission for public meetings.
The direction was issued while considering a plea by TVK, which sought directions from the court to the state police chief to direct the officers to grant permissions for political campaigns in a fair, uniform and non-discriminatory manner within a time frame fixed by the court.
The HC had stressed the need to protect the interests of the public since, in most cases, the persons affected did not get any compensation. Vijay's party had told the court that it faced difficulties in securing permission from the police to conduct political events. The state had earlier produced photos which showed how the party workers caused damage to the public property.
