Maharashtra Police registered a case and arrested six accused in connection with the alleged honour killing of a youth in Nanded district. The deceased, Saksham Tate (20), was brutally assaulted, his head smashed with a stone, and then shot dead by his girlfriend’s family, police said.

Aanchal, the woman involved, had refused to end her relationship with him. She applied vermilion in his name and declared that she would spend the rest of her life in his home. During Tate’s funeral, Aanchal placed vermilion on her forehead as a symbol of marriage and announced that she would live in his household as their daughter-in-law.

Aanchal had met Tate through her brothers, and their relationship grew as he frequently visited their home. Despite her family’s caste-based objections, the two continued their relationship for three years. As tensions escalated and her family realised she intended to marry Tate, hostility intensified. On Thursday, her father and brothers allegedly attacked Tate and fatally shot him.

At the funeral, Aanchal arrived at Tate’s residence, applied turmeric to his body, and put vermilion on her forehead. After symbolically “marrying” him, she said she would remain in his home as his wife. “Our love won, even in Saksham’s death, and my father and brothers lost,” she said.

Explaining her decision, she added, “Even though Tate is dead, our love is still alive.” Aanchal has also demanded the death penalty for those behind his murder.
