India on Sunday expressed deep concern over the unfolding situation in Venezuela, a day after the United States captured President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a military operation in the oil-rich South American nation.

New Delhi said it is closely following developments in Venezuela and reiterated its support for the safety and well-being of the country’s people.

“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

India also stressed the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis to maintain regional stability. “India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela,” the MEA said.

“We call upon all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region,” it added.

The US launched the military operation in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, after repeatedly accusing Maduro of involvement in drug trafficking, allegations he has strongly denied.

Following the US action, Maduro and his wife were taken to New York, prompting Venezuela to declare a national emergency. The MEA said the Indian embassy in Caracas remains in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to extend all possible assistance.
