Underwater cameras, fishermen to trace boy thrown into river

Malappuram: The search for nine-year-old Muhammed Shaheen, who was flung into the Kadalundi River from the Anakayam bridge by his paternal uncle, would be done with the help of underwater cameras.

The investigating officers assume that the boy's body may have been washed off to the sea by now. Police have already requested the fishermen to search for the body in the sea.

Shaheen’s paternal uncle, Edayatoor Makkarathodi Muhammed, is currently in police custody for reportedly throwing the boy off the bridge after a failed kidnap and ransom bid.

Though a thorough search was conducted around the premises of the Anakayam Bridge as soon as Muhammed confessed to the crime, the divers couldn’t do much due to the rising water levels and strong currents.

Underwater cameras would be used to capture pictures at the places where silt and mud have created blocks in the river. The search would be conducted first near the check dams and also where the water current is significantly high.

Police, fire force, volunteers and the local people had launched a search for the school boy's body soon after the killer confessed.

3 kg gold and a social media panic

Shaheen's uncle had picked him up from near his school and driven him around on his bike. Muhammed reportedly wanted to coerce Shaheen's father to give him a share of the 3 kg gold he owned.

After driving around for some time, Mohammed panicked seeing the news of Shaheen's disappearance on social media. Soon after he pushed his nephew off the bridge.

The boy's clothes and school bag were recovered from the stream near his home and later the police cracked the case studying 20 CCTV footages from the area.
