Kasaragod: Two Youth Congress workers were hacked to death near Periya in Kasaragod on Sunday. The deceased have been identified as Kripesh and Sarath Lal, both hailing from Kalliyode near Periya. The Youth Congress has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Kerala on Monday.

The duo was attacked by three men at 8:30pm on Sunday. The gang followed them on motorcycles and attacked them near Periya. They were dragged to a nearby bush where the gang fatally attacked them. Kripesh died on the spot. Sarath Lal later succumbed to injuries while being taken to a hospital in Mangaluru. Kripesh's body was brought to the Kasaragod General Hospital Sunday night.

Meanwhile, the Congress alleged that CPI(M) is behind the attack. The UDF has called for a district-wide hartal in Kasaragod on Monday. The Youth Congress will observe a day of protest on Monday. The Kerala Students Union (KSU) has also called for an education bandh in the state on Monday.

Tension prevailed between CPM and Congress workers in the Periya area earlier.

Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala alleged that the murder was premeditated. CPM is trying to eliminate Congress with the backing of power, he claimed.

KPCC president Mullappally Ramachandran will head to Kasaragod on Monday.

"The slain workers were innocent. They were threatened earlier also. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan should explain why they were killed," Mullappally said.

"Pinarayi does not have a conscience. If he is courageous, he should ask his followers to lay down arms. The Kasaragod murders show that he is not ready to give up violence. Public conscience should come up against these murders. The Congress will continue the agitations till this violence comes to an end," he added.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi tweeted the party would not rest till the murderers were brought to justice.
