Kerala cop commit suicide alleging harassment by senior

Aluva: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) attached to the Thadiyittaparambu Police Station committed suicide after sending messages to colleagues alleging abuse by a senior officer.

P C Babu, 48, was found hanging at his home in Kuttamassery near here on Wednesday. The body was spotted by his wife early on Wednesday in a room in the ground floor of his two-storey ancestral house. He was immediately taken to district hospital, where he was pronounced brought dead.

The police surgeon at Ernakulam Government Medical College, Kalamassery, conducted the autopsy.

According to the police, Babu had sent a message to his colleagues in Thadiyittaparambu Police Station's WhatsApp group late on Tuesday night saying he was committing suicide citing that Sub-inspector R Rajesh was abusing him.

He used to talk about his plight to relatives and friends.

Babu, who was with the police force for 27 years, was on medical leave since Sunday.

Babu's wife Chandralekha and son Kiran were at home at the time of the incident. Babu's daughter, Karthika was at his sister's house.

DIG to probe

District Crime Branch DySP K M Jijimon will investigate Babu's suicide while Ernakulam Range DIG Kaliraj Mahesh will probe the circumstances that forced the cop to commit suicide, state Police chief DGP Loknath Behra said.

Aluva MLA Anwar Sadath has sought a probe into the circumstances that led to Babu's death. Kerala Police Association general secretary P G Anil Kumar also sought strict action.
