Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government is planning to revise the students' bus fare based on family income as per details provided on the ration card.
Students belonging to BPL (Below Poverty Line) households will be allowed to travel free-of-cost, informed Minister for Transport, Antony Raju here on Tuesday.
The minister said that a decision will be taken only after consultation with the chief minister.
Raju had held a meeting with the Justice Ramachandran Committee appointed to study the bus fare hike demanded by bus owners.
The committee had earlier recommended hiking the minimum fare to Rs 10 with an addition of 90 paise per kilometre.
It had also recommended hiking the students' concession charge to 50% of the normal fare with a minimum of Rs 5.
Night bus fare to go up?
The minister said it has also been recommended to hike night fare for bus travel. He said the proposal was made considering several services were discontinuing at night due to fewer passengers and it was affecting frequent travellers.
