ASI stabbed while preventing robbery attempt in Kochi, assailant nabbed

Kochi: A police officer was injured while trying to prevent a vehicle robbery here early on Wednesday.

Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Girish Kumar of the Elamakkara Police station was stabbed by the thief near Kochi's Edappally Metro Station at 1.30am on Wednesday.

The assailant identified as Bichu from HMT Colony, Kalamassery, has been nabbed by the police.

The police were on the lookout for Bichu and two of his accomplices for stealing a bike from near Lulu Mall on Tuesday.

The night patrol team later spotted the thieves and the stolen bike near the Oberon Mall. When they tried to escape to the Edappally Junction nearby, the police surrounded them. Bichu stabbed the ASI with a pen knife when he came forward to nab the former.

“Girish Kumar is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kochi. His condition is not serious,” the police informed.

The police are on the lookout for the other two accomplices who escaped from the site. The assailant was presented to court and remanded to custody.
