Actor Mammootty extends legal help to tribal youth Madhu's family

Agali: Senior advocate V Nandakumar has been entrusted to provide legal assistance to the family of slain tribal youth Madhu, according to Robert Kuriakose who looks after the philanthropic activities of actor Mammootty.

As per Mammootty's directives, Robert said he contacted the family immediately after coming to know that the advocate appointed for the Madhu case was unable to appear in court. Mammootty had directed to render the best possible help without any delay.

The actor also contacted Law Minister P Rajeev. The minister has assured Mammootty that a competent advocate would be appointed as the special prosecutor and there would be effective government interventions in the case.

Arrangements are in place to make legal assistance available for Madhu's family as and when they require it. Robert Kuriakose also said that V Nandakumar, the senior advocate in Madras and Kerala High Courts, will meet Madhu's mother and family members.

Madhu was beaten to death by a group of local people at Attappady in Palakkad in 2018.

Kerala HC on Madhu case

The Kerala High Court has directed that other cases should be considered at the Mannarkkad Special Court only if there is lesser number of SC/ST cases.

The court also said that proceedings can be completed in those general cases in which trial has started. The High Court directive comes amid a controversy that the trial in the Madhu case is getting prolonged.

The court gave the directive following complaints that SC/ST cases are getting prolonged when other cases are taken up at the Special Court, which has to consider only cases relating to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.

The director of the Scheduled Tribes Development Department has also informed the court of the matter.

The High Court stated that other cases should be considered only if the cases in the SC/ST category are below 100.

Around 320 SC/ST cases are pending in the court, which started functioning six years ago. The trial has started in 50 cases. There are around 170 cases in the general category over Abkari and civil matters. All the cases related to the Scs/STs in the district come up before this court. As there was no permanent judge for nearly one year, the disposal of cases had been adversely affected.
