Jobs in sports quota: More promises, no action yet from Kerala Government

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Government continues to take deserving sports-persons waiting for a government job for a ride.

In the latest promise, Minister for Sports V Abdurahiman said that the Cabinet will soon consider the proposal to provide jobs to 24 persons in the sports quota list for the years 2010-14.

The Minister also said that the committee set up to study the possibilities of employing the other sports-persons would meet as soon as possible.

Abdurahiman’s comments were made during a meeting with the sports-persons who had found a place on the sports quota list of the government. Incidentally, the Minister agreed to meet the sports-persons only after ‘Malayala Manorama’ published a report on the unfilled promises of the government.

Earlier, sports-persons had staged a stir by crawling on their knees around the Secretariat – the administrative headquarters of the government in state capital Thiruvananthapuram – seeking appointment from the sports quota list. Subsequently, on December 17 last year, the Minister promised to provide government jobs to 24 sports-persons on the list within two months. He also said that a panel will be constituted to study how the remaining sports-persons on the list could be accommodated in the government sector. This panel would submit its report within 45 days, he added. Based on these promises, the sports-persons called off their agitation.

However, even though the deadline set by the Government lapsed on Thursday, not even a single sportsperson received an appointment letter. Moreover, the order constituting the study panel was issued only a few days ago.

The sports-persons, who include several women, had won medals for Kerala in national events during 2010-14. They were promised appointment as lower division (LD) clerks.
