Former Director General of Police (DGP) R Sreelekha has admitted to doing a few favours for actor Dileep when he was in jail in 2017 in the actor assault case.

In an interview given to Manorama News, the IPS officer opened up on the incident that had drawn her much flak when Dileep was a prisoner in the Sub Jail at Aluva.

Sreelekha, who claims to have had not known Dileep personally said she felt sympathy for the actor's condition and did him a few favours out of kindness.

"His condition in jail was heart-rending," Sreelekha said. "He was lying on a simple mat alongside a few other prisoners. When I asked him to get up, he was shivering and collapsed while trying to get up.

"He was so miserable, quite unlike the actor we see on screen. I have a kind heart, so whenever I see sufferings my heart goes out to the sufferer.

"So I brought him to the superintendent's room. He could not even speak and then I offered him a drink of coconut juice. Yes, out of kindness I gave him some extra care," Sreelekha said.

The first woman IPS officer in Kerala Cadre who had an eventful career added that she had also done similar favours to other prisoners who were not celebrities like Dileep.

Through Sreelekha's intervention, Dileep was given an additional mat and a blanket. His ear balance problem was also treated. "I directed to serve him nutritional food and because he was under-trial prisoner permission was given to let him have homely food. But other than that no extra facilities were provided," said the now retired officer.
