Kannur: The police have taken into custody seven suspects in connection with the murder of CPM activist Haridas in Thalassery early on Monday.

A special team split into six units will investigate the case, Kannur City Police Commissioner R Ilango said.

“Since the murder took place at the victim's home, we cannot conclude that it is a politically motivated murder yet,” he added.

Haridas was murdered in front of his home by five people, the victim's younger brother who was witness to the crime had claimed.

Ilango added that the police would take BJP Councillor Lijesh into custody for issuing threats during a speech.

Inquest report

The inquest report states that Haridas had over 20 wounds on his body. The left leg was completely severed. A majority of the wounds were found below the waist.

CPM activist and Punnol native Haridas was hacked to death in Kannur's Thalassery on Monday.

Haridas, who was a fisherman, was murdered at 1.30 am while returning from work at New Mahe.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has blamed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for the murder.
