Thiruvananthapuram: Veteran Congress leader Thalekunnil Basheer, 79, passed away on Friday.

He was at his residence at Vembayam here.
The leader had been undergoing treatment for heart-related ailments.

Basheer served as a member of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He was the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) general secretary and vice president.

He has authored several books including 'Velicham Kooduthal Velicham', 'Rajeev Gandhi : Surya Thejassinte Ormakku', 'Mandelayude Nattil, Gandhijiyudeyum' and 'K Damodaran muthal Berlin Kunjananthan Nair vare'.

Basheer was married to Malayalam actor Prem Nazir's younger sister Suhra. They are survived by two children.
