CPM to hard sell Kerala model to party congress delegates

CPM conventions from Sept, Kannur to host Party Congress in April

Kannur: The second Pinarayi government has scheduled its first anniversary celebrations to coincide with CPM's 23rd party Congress in a bid to showcase to party delegates the factors that had helped it to win a second consecutive term in power.

Both the party congress and anniversary celebrations will be held in Kannur. While Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the government's first anniversary celebrations on Sunday (April 3), the E K Nayanar Academy in Kannur will host the party congress from April 6 to 10.

A mega exhibition showcasing the first Pinarayi government's achievements, and the public services it had rolled out, will be the main attraction of the anniversary celebration. The exhibition on Police Maidan will be a scaled-down version of Kerala.

The show has been organised adjacent to the Collectorate Maidan, the venue of an exhibition of history and art scheduled as part of the party congress, ostensibly to attract the 800-odd delegates expected from across the country attending the CPM meet.

A section of party leaders are holding that the development policies initiated in defiance of the CPM central leadership culminated in the decline and fall of the Left government in West Bengal. A small section of leaders, especially from West Bengal, are apprehensive that the neo-development policies of the CPM-led government in Kerala, too, are fraught with the same dangers.

The CPM-led government, which had come to power in West Bengal in 1977, ruled that State till 2011, winning consecutive elections.

The corrective forces within the CPM in Kerala have become obsolete with the previous State conference. The leaders are on the same page regarding the government's development policies. The four-day State conference held in Kochi in March decided to accept foreign investment for development activities.

If the West Bengal government had implemented policies despite opposition from the central leadership, leaders in Kerala have been hoping for the national leadership's support for its decisions.

The exhibition, Kerala leaders felt, will help in creating a favourable opinion among the party delegates. It needs the support of delegates from other States to win the central leadership's approval for the political and development line it has adopted. Politically, the CPM in Kerala is against having any truck with the Congress party.

Pinarayi to inaugurate first anniversary celebrations today

Kannur: The first anniversary celebrations of the second Pinarayi government will begin here on Sunday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the celebrations at the Police Maidan here at 6 pm. He will also open 'Ente Keralam', a mega exhibition organised as part of the anniversary celebrations.

Minister K Rajan will preside over the inaugural meet of the celebrations, which will culminate on May 20, the day on which the Pinarayi-led government took charge for the second consecutive term.

The celebrations will conclude at Thiruvananthapuram on May 20. The 'Ente Keralam' exhibition will be organised in all districts, besides elaborate celebratory events in Kannur, Kozhikode, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.
