'No truck with Congress party': CPM Party Congress adopts Kerala unit's line

Kannur: The ongoing CPM Party Congress in Kannur has decided not to enter into any political alliance with Congress Party even though the party admitted that Congress is not an equal enemy to the party compared to the BJP.

The Party Congress rejected the arguments of some delegates that Congress should not be isolated.

The Party Congress ratified the political line put forward by the draft political resolution that a national alternative to BJP should be found by building suitable political alliances in various States.

But the political resolution could not be passed unanimously at the Party Congress as four persons voted against it. When the amendments were put to vote, one delegate opposed them.

Some of the delegates gave a letter to the presidium chairman Manik Sarkar, complaining that party general secretary Sitaram Yechuri did not give a proper reply to the amendments moved by the delegates. It became notable when Manik Sarkar told the conference openly that he was bringing this matter to the attention of the general secretary.

As many as 35 delegates spoke at the discussions held on Thursday and Friday. As many as 390 amendments and 12 suggestions were moved by the delegates. But no major amendments were approved by the conference.

While replying to discussions, Yechuri made it clear that the party would decide on the suitable electoral strategies from time to time for garnering a maximum number of anti-BJP votes.

He opined that Congress did not have the strength to stitch an alliance of various political parties which are opposed to the BJP.

Finally, the anti-Congress line of the Kerala unit became accepted at the Party Congress.

KK Ragesh, while speaking for the Kerala unit, attributed the reason for the bad plight of the Opposition in the country to the wrong policies of Congress.

He accused Congress of adopting a mild Hindutva stance while saying that Congress had shed the Nehruvian ideology that religion should not be used for political purposes.

While saying that Congress leaders were keeping themselves ready for sale to BJP, he said that by fielding Rahu Gandhi in Kerala in the last Lok Sabha polls, Congress' only aim was to defeat the CPM.

He added that in Parliament, UDF MPs were trying to run roughshod over the Left parties.

While taking an indirect dig at the pro-Congress stand of some of the party's national leaders, Ragesh said that the CPM had still credibility at the national level even though the party was weak at the pan-Indian level.

Bengal delegates support Congress

The delegates from West Bengal, who spoke at the Party Congress, came in support of the Congress Party.

They taunted the Kerala delegates for their comment that the party should team up with the regional parties instead of Congress.

They questioned the secular credentials of these regional parties who hobnobbed with the BJP whenever they got a chance.

The delegates from Bengal advocated cooperation with  Congress even in the absence of electoral ties with the latter.
