Kozhikode: In a tragic incident, a youth and his cousin were drowned in the Vilangad River at Nadapuram in Kozhikode district on Saturday when they went sightseeing in the area. Meanwhile, the local people rescued the youth’s sister who also had fallen into the river.

Hridwin, aged 22, son of Peppachan and Merlin of Koovathode and Ashmi, 14, daughter of Sabu and Manju of Alappad in Alappuzha were the victims. Hridwin’s sister Hridya was saved. Merlin and Manju are sisters.

According to local people, the incident occurred around 11am. Hridwin’s family had reached Nadapuram from Bengaluru on Friday to celebrate Easter. On Saturday morning, Hridwin, along with his sister Hridya and cousin Ashmi, went to see a new check-dam built on the Vilangad River, which is near Ashmi’s house.

When Hridwin tried to take photos, he lost balance and fell into the water. There was a strong current in the river which swept the youth away. Ashmi and Hridya jumped into the river to save Hridwin, but they also were carried away by the current.

The frantic youngsters raised an alarm, hearing which some local people carried out immediate rescue operations. But, even though Hridya could be saved, Hridwin and Ashmi lost their lives.
