Thiruvananthapuram: Toughening its stands against the Vizhinjam port and the public sector undertaking overseeing the project, Latin Archdiocese on Sunday said it will not be intimidated by the compensation claims worth over Rs 78 crore.
Responding to the Vizhinjam International Seaport Ltd's (VISL) recommendation to the state government that losses caused to the Adani Group should be recouped from the Church, Latin Archdiocese Vicar General Fr. Eugene Pereira told Manorama News that protestors will not be scared by such tactics.
He said VISL has been acting as a middleman and henchman of Adani Group. "Who will compensate crores of rupees loss suffered by the fisherfolk in livelihood due to the project," he asked.
VISL has written to the government demanding compensation from the Latin Archdiocese for obstructing the construction of the port.
This suggestion was given as an explanation for the letter sent by Adani Port demanding to settle the strike and pay compensation.
The stat PSU has claimed that damages should be collected from those who caused the stoppage of construction.
Adani Group claims it suffered a loss of Rs 78.70 crore. Based on the letter, Ports Minister Ahmed Devarkovil has invited the company for a discussion on Thursday. Resumption of port construction and compensation are likely to be discussed during the meeting.
