Wayanad: A woman jumped into the river with her child from Pathikkal Bridge at Venniyod near Kambalakkad on Thursday afternoon, police said. The woman was rescued by the villagers. 

The woman has been identified as Darshana, the wife of Om Prakash, a resident of Venniyode. Her child Daksha, 5 is missing.

After hours of search for the child, officials of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Fire Force team from Kalpetta suspended the rescue operation for the day due to poor light.  According to revenue officials, the search will resume on Friday.

The woman, who was admitted to a private hospital at Kalpetta, has been shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Her condition continues to be critical, hospital sources said.

Police suspect it to be a suicide attempt. The woman had consumed poison before jumping into the river with the child, said witnesses.
