Thodupuzha: A patient died when the ambulance transporting him met with an accident on the Puliyanmala-Thodupuzha state highway near Guruthikalam, Moolamattam.
The deceased, PK Thankappan (78), was a native of Chappath in Kattappana. He was being transferred from the Idukki Medical College to a private hospital in Thodupuzha when the accident occurred.
Reportedly, two others were also injured in the incident.
Thankappan's son Suresh, grandson Appu and the nurse who accompanied the patient in the ambulance were injured. The accident took place on the Idukki road near Kanjar around 3.30 pm on Sunday. Thankappan who was under treatment at Idukki Government Medical College met with the accident while being shifted to Pala Medicity.
According to the primary investigation, the ambulance overturned due to brake failure. Though Thankappan who sustained severe injuries rushed to the hospital, he breathed his last midway. His body was shifted to the mortuary of Moolamattam Bishop Hospital. The injured are being treated at the same hospital.
The funeral of the deceased will be held on Monday at his residence. Thankappan is survived by his wife Shantamma, son Suresh, and daughters Sindhu and Sandhya.
